LouElla R. Saul Memorial Session
Fossil Molluscan Papers in Memory of LouElla R. Saul
1928 - 2021
On June 21, 2021, Cretaceous molluscan specialist LouElla (Lou) Rankin Saul passed away at the age of 93. In her honor we invite all interested paleontologists and neontologists with an interest in fossil mollusks to participate in this memorial session. Topics may include any local, regional, or worldwide fossil molluscan subject including (but not limited to) biostratigraphy, systematics, paleobiogeography, paleoclimatology, or paleoecology.
LouElla was a leader in Cretaceous fossil molluscan research in the western United States, especially on those groups from California and Baja California, México. Her passing in June of 2021 has left a huge void in the fossil mollusk research community. She generously shared her vast knowledge of paleontology with colleagues, students, professionals, and amateurs alike.
She was Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology and Recent Invertebrates at UCLA from 1965 until 1985. When the UCLA collections were transferred to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, she became Collection Manager of Invertebrate Paleontology. In 2004, LouElla received the prestigious Gibert D. Harris Award from the Paleontological Research Institution, which houses one of ten of the largest collections of fossil and Recent shells in the United States. Over 250 molluscan taxa bear LouElla's name both singly and with many co-authors and at least eight taxa were named in her honor.
There will also be a special presentation in her honor by Lindsey T. Groves (LACM) or Richard L. Squires (ex CSUN, LACMIP associate).
